Too many digital camera owners have never figured out how to transfer the images from their camera to their computer. The Golden Years Geek explains how. We walk through the process of transferring photos to the computer using Windows Photo Gallery, a free photo management application by Microsoft. To download the pictures from your phone to your computer you need to connect your computer and the mobile device using USB or Bluetooth connection. To transfer pictures from Mobile to your PC you may first install the software provided by your mobile phone manufacturer and try to download the pictures.

  1. After your hardware has been connected, the camera or memory card opens showing the pictures or videos on the device. Follow these steps to transfer the photos from the camera or memory card to the computer.
  2. Download (Windows) Download (Mac) How to use (Windows) Import. Importing images from Cyber-shot (USB). When you select Select file to import, the photos and videos in the camera or the memory card are displayed. Check on the checkbox of the images you want to import. Select destination folder to which the images are saved.

Note:

  • Enterprise IDs are not supported.
  • The app downloads all your Lightroom photos and videos from the cloud as original files and writes them into a date-based folder hierarchy at the hard-drive location that you specify.
  • The edits made to the raw images are written into the XMP sidecar files that accompany the downloaded raw files.
  • For the photos originally uploaded from Lightroom Classic that only have a Smart Preview synced to the cloud, the app downloads DNG Smart Previews only for such photos.

Steps to install the app and download your Lightroom photos

  1. Download and install the app.

    Go to https://lightroom.adobe.com/lightroom-downloader

    In the Lightroom Downloader web page that opens in your browser, choose your operating system to begin downloading the setup file.

    Windows

    To install the app:

    1. After downloading the LightroomDownloader.zip file, extract the contents using the default operating system utility or a third-party software such as WinZip or PKZIP.
    2. Double-click the Set-up.exe file to launch the setup.

    macOS

    Double-click the LightroomDownloader.dmg file to mount/install it.

  2. Launch the app and choose to begin.

    After the installation is complete, launch the Lightroom Downloader app.

    On the start screen, click Begin.

  3. Sign in with your Adobe ID, Facebook, or Google account.

    Once you sign in, the app begins analyzing library and finding your photos.

  4. Click the Choose a Folder button.

    In the dialog box that appears, choose a destination on your hard-drive where you want to download the photos.

    Ensure that you have sufficient disk space to download your Lightroom library content.

  5. Start download.

    After you've chosen a download destination that has enough free space, click Start Download.

    Wait for completion.

    The app now begins downloading your photos.

    The blue bar indicates the Overall Progress percentage. The Currently Downloading section displays the name and extension of the image files and its download progress.

    At the bottom of the screen, you also have the option to pause and resume the download activity.

  6. View the output folder.

    Once the app completes downloading your photos, click the Open Folder button at the bottom to view the downloaded files on your computer.

Step 1: Open a search engine such as Google and type ‘Windows Photo Gallery’ into the space provided. If you hit ‘Enter’ or click Search, you’ll be brought to a page listing all of the results in descending order of relevance.

Step 2: Once the Windows Photo Gallery page loads, click the blue bar in the middle that’s labelled Download Now:

Step 3: This will immediately launch a pop-up box headed ‘File Download – Security Warning’. Beneath this, it asks: ‘Do you want to run or save this file?’ Click Run.

Step 4: Next, depending on the level of security settings on your computer, you may see another pop-up box asking if you want to ‘allow the following program to make changes to this computer’. This is just your computer being overly cautious. Check that the ‘Verified publisher’ in this window says ‘Microsoft’ and, if it does, click Yes.

Step 5: Windows Live Essentials (which is a package of 11 free software programs from Microsoft) will begin its installation process. A new pop-up will ask you to choose between installing all of these programs or only those that you want. You may wish to download all of them, but for now click Choose the programs you want to install.

Step 6: In the next window, tick ‘Photo Gallery and Movie Maker’ and click Install.

Step 7: When the software has finished installing, you’ll get a final pop-up window announcing that your Windows photo gallery download is ‘Done!’

However, for Windows PhotoGallery installation to be complete, you’ll need to restart your computer. A pop-up window will offer you the choice of clicking a button to restart it now or one to restart it later if you want to continue surfing the internet. For now, choose Restart Now.

Step 8: Your computer will shut down any other open windows and restart itself. Once it starts up again, you should be able to see the Windows Photo Gallery software listed among your ‘Programs’ when you click the Microsoft Windows icon or ‘Start’ icon in the lower left-hand corner of your screen.
